Galatians 4:6,7 “And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, ‘Abba, Father.’ Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.”
My thoughts: “Abba” is a short Aramaic word for “Father”. Since our heavenly Father, Jesus, has freed us from the bondage of the Mosaic Law, we are no longer slaves. As slaves in the Old Covenant, we had to carry out God’s commandments while operating in our sinful nature. Now, since Jesus paid the price for our sins, we no longer have to live in bondage to our sinful nature. We truly repent from our sins and surrender our lives to God when we put to death our sinful desires (Romans 6:6,7). Now, with the Holy Spirit’s power (which is made evident through His grace), we can carry out God’s commands. However, since we are no longer slaves to the law, but God’s own children, we can enjoy communion with Him as we worship Him freely. Communion is not only when we drink grape juice or eat bread in remembrance of His sacrifice, but a daily partnership with God’s plan by pursuing Him and experiencing the beautiful goodness of His presence. Communion with God is our pursuit of Him and His response to us. Since we have been made His heirs, we can inherit eternal life. Eternal life does not begin one day in Heaven, but starts right now. As we live for God, he gives us a rich and satisfying life (which is only a glimpse of what is to come in Heaven). Heaven is the reward after we have given God everything on earth. Since we are God’s children, let us approach Him as children and not as slaves. Let us come before Him with willingness, not hard hearts. He wants the best for us, but we have to want it also.
